Playgrounds

Most playground owners and operators rely on Mother Nature to do the cleaning.  And for the most part, Mother Nature does a good job. However, there are still plenty of germs at an outdoor playground.  Nasty germs can spread across the playground, as small hands grasp the swing chain, use the hand-grips at the monkey bars, and push off from the slide.  Studies, such as one published in the New England Journal of Medicine on March 18, show COVID-19 can live 3 days on plastic and steel.

The Town of Hanna wants to inform all users that the playground equipment in Hanna’s playgrounds is NOT  SANITIZED and the playgrounds will not be closed at this time.  In this era of social distancing, the biggest risk is not the equipment but rather it is other users spreading COVID-19 while at a public venue such as a playground or park.  So, how can we protect ourselves and our children?

  • Adult supervision
  • Thoroughly wash or sanitize hands before and after each use
  • Use a disinfecting wipe to sanitize apparatus about to be used before and after and where there are few or no other users in the pay area
  • Be kind to others and ensure to maintain your distance. (2m)
  • Find other activities to do with your family and refrain from using the playgrounds

Office Closure

Effective Tues Mar 24, the Town Office will be closed to the public.  Staff will still be working so please continue to use the phone or email.  403-854-4433 or admin@hanna.ca  After hours, the phone holds voice mail so you may leave a message if you’d like your call returned and the email account is constantly monitored and forwarded accordingly.

Utility Payments

The utility bills that were mailed last week are due March 31st.  Customers can pay their utility bills in various ways.  Visiting this link will show you all of your options.  That said, Town of Hanna will try to be as compassionate as possible.   If you are facing financial difficulty due to changes in employment, you may defer your Town Utilities until a later date.  There are no penalties or late charges.

Please ensure your speakers are turned up.  The sound is very low on these videos.

Don’t Flush It All: With the increase in the sale of bathroom products, it seems a fitting time to remind all citizens. Even though those wipes claim that they are “flushable” they continue to cause problems in the sewer system. Please view all the details of that article here. What Not to Flush

Dr. Fortna Addresses Clients: In case you missed it, you can watch Dr. Fortna’s message regarding the Hanna Medical Clinic at the Town Covid-19 Page. www.hanna.ca/covid19

New Video: Today, the Government of Alberta released this video. Help Prevent the Spread

Physical Distancing: We are being encouraged to use the term Physical Distancing as too many people are not understanding Social Distancing. Read more about Physical Distancing https://www.alberta.ca/assets/documents/covid-19-social-distancing-fact-sheet.pdf

Town Newsletter: If you haven’t signed up for the Town of Hanna newsletter, don’t delay. Town of Hanna launched this earlier than scheduled in order to help get local information to Hanna & area citizens. Sign up by scrolling to the bottom of any page found at hanna.ca

Smiley Face Project: Have you started to notice Smiley Faces in the windows of homes and businesses? A local initiative has begun that encourages people to put up your best smiley face. Then, when people are physical distancing, they can walk or drive around and try to find smiley faces. A little bit of sunshine in an otherwise trying time. This project has taken off and smiley faces are turning up in other towns and cities.

Tax Payment Suspension Request:  If you are setup so that tax payments are automatically withdrawn by the Town of Hanna from your bank account, you can temporarily suspend these payments.  In order to request this, you must send your request by email or written letter.  Please include your Name and Civic Address of the property you are asking to suspend.  This must be completed by March 27.  Please email to admin@hanna.ca or mail to Box 430.

Hanna Medical Clinic:  Please do NOT present to the clinic without phoning first.  Everyone should stay  home when possible.  Appointments are only being booked for the calendar week and non-essential appointments such a yearly check ups, insurance forms, drivers medicals are not being booked at all.

Hanna’s Doctors are dedicated to making sure you have the health care you need.  There are several options available

  • Telephone prescription renewals when possible.   Call into the clinic for an “appointment” time, and the Doctor will do their best to call you at that time.  If a renewal can be issued, the prescription will be faxed to your pharmacy.  Please do not rush to the Pharmacy immediately to pick up your renewal.   Call ahead and make arrangements for your pickup.  They are extremely busy.
  • Home visits:  In cases where it is safer for a patient to remain at home, a physician can provide a home visit. Criteria apply. Call the clinic and ask to speak to your physicians nurse/assistant.  Examples of this might be: Cancer patients, immuno-suppressed patients, at risk patients, small babies, single parent with multiple children.

As per Alberta Labour Standards employees are not required to produce sick notes at this time.  Driver’s license renewals have been extended to May 15th, 2020.  Practice good hand hygiene and social-distancing.  Self -isolate as asked.  Stay home whenever possible!

Video Update:  Dr. Wendy Fortna and Mayor Warwick each prepared and released a video with messages for residents.  Please,  click on the tab above that says Videos to watch their message.

Email Newsletter:  You are now able to subscribe to a  timely and relevant email from the Town of Hanna.  Please visit this link to learn more.

Big Country Waste Commission:  Precautions are being taken to protect staff.  There have been no changes to hours of service or levels of operation.

Henry Kroeger Regional Water Commission:  Staff are reduced and will be rotated and on standby.  Procedures are in place to limit exposure to one another and the public.  Bulk water access remains available and unchanged.  Alberta Environment and Parks is closely monitoring and will provide guidance and support if operations staff become sick and are unable to work.  HKRWSC believes it is prepared and will do its best to provide a continuous supply of safe potable water throughout the pandemic.

Tues Mar 17 at 3:30 pm:
The Town of Hanna Office continues to operate at full capacity.  Consideration is being given to stagger schedules in order to protect staff.  Many Hanna businesses have modified their services and hours of operation. As we become aware of those modifications, they are being included in the listings below.  Please forward your information to the Chamber of Commerce info@hannachamber.ca or to the Town Office 403-854-4433 or info@hanna.ca.

If you are returning to the community, do NOT go grocery shopping.  Go straight home and self isolate.  There are many alternative ways to get your groceries and supplies.  Volunteers are willing to shop for you or the grocery stores have procedures in place.  Please contact them directly.

Premier Kenny has declared a public health emergency in Alberta.

Mon Mar 16, 2020 5:15 PM:
Other than Town of Hanna facilities being closed, there are no changes to service levels.  The Town Office remains open to the public however we encourage people to use social distancing.  It is our belief that there is no business so urgent, that it can’t wait.  Bill payments can wait and there is no intent to disconnect outstanding utility accounts.  If you have questions or concerns, please phone or email before stopping by.  403-854-4433 or admin@hanna.ca

March 15, 2020 6:55PM:  In light of the announcements this afternoon from the Province of Alberta, the Hanna Emergency Management Committee has decided to CLOSE all town owned public facilities effective tonight, March 15 until further notice.  These facilities include the following:  Arena, Curling Rink, Community Centre and Centennial Place.  All Centennial Place Access Passes will be revoked and refunded.

LOCAL business decisions that may assist Hanna & area citizens with their self isolation are indicated below.  Note that this list does not include decisions imposed by Alberta Health Services.  If you would like your business to be included, please email webmaster@hanna.ca or phone 403-854-4433 and leave a message.

March 14, 2020  11:30 am:  The Town of Hanna recognizes the importance of attempting to halt the spread of Covid-19.  Members of the Town of Hanna Emergency Social Services team will be providing additional information on local supports that can help with minimizing the impacts.

March 13, 11:00 am:  As of today, no Town of Hanna facilities have been closed.  Please confirm with event organizers regarding cancelleations.  If the Town of Hanna is made aware of an event cancellation, it will be posted on our event calendar at www.hanna.ca/events

As part of our emergency preparedness planning, the Town of Hanna has been working closely with the Alberta Emergency Management Agency.  The Director of Emergency Management, the Chief Administrative Officer and the Public Information Officer receive regular updates and attend online briefings pertaining to not only the scope of the virus but also any recommendations to mitigate the impact to the area.

At this point in time, you are urged to refer to official health agencies ONLY for advice and information.  When or if the impact of Covid-19 strikes closer to home, the Town of Hanna website and Facebook page will be your direct link to information.  Please see a list of important links below.  This list may grow and change in the coming days.

COVID-19 Measures for Employers

The CRA is closely monitoring the COVID-19 situation, and working with government partners to implement the best possible measures to serve Canadians, and prevent disruptions to their tax and benefit affairs.

For employers, the following measures are in effect:

Requirements to PAY (RTP)

  • Effective immediately, the CRA will not be sending any RTP to employers.
  • For RTPs currently in place, remittances are not required, until further notice.
  • The CRA also requests that any RTPs that you may receive this week not be actioned.

The Temporary Wage Subsidy for Small Business
The Government of Canada also announced a temporary wage subsidy for employers for a period of three months. Effective immediately, eligible employers are permitted to reduce remittances of federal, provincial, or territorial income tax by the amount of the subsidy.

Find out more about the Government of Canada’s tax measures to help support those affected by the COVID-19 virus.
